A goal should not just be something that is not only important to you. It should have value for you and your life.
Motivation is the key to achieving goals. If the goal is not relevant or if you have has no interest in the outcome. – THEN WHAT?
Goals should be related to high priorities in your life.
Without this type of focus, it’s easy to end up with far too many goals and too little time to do what it takes to succeed with any of them.
Achieving one’s goal(s) requires commitment. To increase the chance of success, you need to feel a sense of urgency; an "I must do this" attitude.
Tip: Write it down!! Write down why it's valuable and important.
Answer this question - "If I were to share my goal with others, what would I tell them to convince them it was a worthwhile goal?"
Write it down because....
Physically writing a goal down makes it real; there’s no excuse for forgetting about it.
Choosing your words:
The words used to describe the goal are important. They can make the difference between a goal that is motivating and one that allows you a way-out, an excuse for not succeeding.
Ø Example, "I will reduce my operating expenses by 10 percent this year," not "I would like to reduce my operating expenses by 10 percent this year."
Ø Example: "I will hold on to all existing employees for the next quarter" rather than "I will reduce employee turnover."
This step is often missed in the process of goal setting.
