Goals that motivate

A goal should not just be something that is not only important to you.  It should have value for you and your life.

Motivation is the key to achieving goals.  If the goal is not relevant or if you have has no interest in the outcome. – THEN WHAT?

  • People are not motivated to achieve goals if they aren’t important and of value to them.
  • Without motivation, goals are unlikely to be successful.

Goals should be related to high priorities in your life.

Without this type of focus, it’s easy to end up with far too many goals and too little time to do what it takes to succeed with any of them.

Achieving one’s goal(s) requires commitment.  To increase the chance of success, you need to feel a sense of urgency; an "I must do this" attitude.

  • When a sense of urgency isn’t present, there’s a risk you'll off doing what needs to done to make the goal a reality.
  • Then, you'll feel disappointed and frustrated with yourself, which is de-motivating.
  • And you can end up in a very destructive "I can't do anything or be successful at anything" frame of mind.

Tip:  Write it down!!  Write down why it's valuable and important.

Answer this question - "If I were to share my goal with others, what would I tell them to convince them it was a worthwhile goal?"

  • This motivating value statement can help if you start to have doubts or lose confidence in their ability to actually make the goal happen.
  • You can post it in a place you will see often to remind you.
  • It may be posted on the refrigerator, on their computer screen, or some other place that is private for them.
